Occupational Therapy Services For the Client with
Cognitive-Perceptual Disorders
The cognitive status of clients is a critical factor that must be assessed and integrated into every occupational therapy plan. For some clients, particularly those with dementia or with acquired brain injury, cognitive impairments must be carefully evaluated and addressed; cognitive impairments can affect safety and independence in all activities of daily living. This course advocates client-centered, occupation-based Occupational Therapy services for clients with cognitive-perceptual disorders. It analyzes how impairments or perceptual disorders in each of the sensory modalities can contribute to occupational dysfunction. The tactile, olfactory, gustatory, visual, auditory, and vestibular systems all provide information to the brain to enable a person to understand the environment and to provide a basis for planning and executing actions. When information is not processed properly or when the nervous system is unable to dampen or inhibit stimuli, a person can act inappropriately, inaccurately, or inadequately.
